Five years ago Michael Schumacher approached Audemars Piguet about the possibility of building a motorsport-specific watch capable of measuring and recording an extended series of consecutive lap times.
It was an engineering feat that no watch company had ever accomplished in a mechanical time piece until now. The Royal Oak Concept Laptimer Michael Schumacher is the first time piece to feature a two angular indexing systems on a single chronograph, both with their own independent memory.
The heart of this amazing time piece is a powerful hand-wound calibre 2923, which operates at a frequency of four-Hertz and features a high-inertia balance wheel. It is capable of recording times down to one-eighth of a second and has a minimum power reserve of 80 hours.
The case housing this engineering accomplishment is as equally impressive. Made from forged carbon with a face crafted from sapphire crystal to achieve a glare-proof finish. A titanium caseback and bezel with 18-ct rose gold and black ceramic crown and push-pieces.
The watch is limited to 221 pieces.
The Royal Oak Concept Laptimer Michael Schumacher speaks to the pursuit of adventure and the ruthlessness of precision. In doing so, it honors the achievements of a legendary race car driver.
